Curtiss SB2C-1 Helldiver of VB-17, US Navy. The aircraft was based on the carrier USS Bunker Hill for the attack on the Japanese base at Pabaul on 11 November 1944. After several striking missions the squadron succeeded in damaging and sinking several warships, but at a loss of 4 of their 23 aircraft. Production of only 2,500 pieces.
The SB2C was designed to replace the SBD Dauntless. When the Helldivers were first delivered they were so poorly manufactured that some broke in half on landing and wings fell apart in a dive. Some countries cancelled orders and the USAAF never used the 900 they received. Eventually after over 800 modifications and technical changes the Helldiver went on to become one of the most effective dive-bombers of WWII. Most people referred to the plane as “The Big Tail Beast” or just “The Beast”.
Complete with optional undercarriage, bomb door and canopy positions, plus elevating rear guns and stand. Only a few hundred of this excellent model have been imported to the UK. Now sold out at wholesale and quite hard to find.
